Henbit is invasive but it is a major source of nectar for pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. It is a small green plant with frills and several pitcher plant shaped flowers that range from white to purple with spots of darker purple. You can usually find this herb commonly in your lawn, or in a meadows as well as in disturbed locations being that it is very hardy. You can also eat it entirely or boil it as a tea (which for many herbs is the best way to ingest for healing properties).
Medicinally, it’s high in iron, magnesium, manganese, calcium, and vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as a whole host of beneficial antioxidants and phytochemicals. Henbit is best used internally as a tea. It is anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory, so it’s great for relieving chronic pain, soreness, and stiffness.
Spiritually, it signifies bringing hope, enduring hardships, overcoming obstacles and tenacity, but since the flower also draws hummingbirds, the bird itself has meaning too (beauty, harmony and messages from the spirit world).
Next time you go to mow your grass, take a look for these tiny purple flowers.
